Every mahjong site claims to know which layouts players love. We’d rather show you numbers.
FreeMahjongPlay launched this spring. In our first months, Google showed our pages in search results 874 times over 28 days, and we anonymously count every visit to a game page, so we can see what people actually play — not just what they search. Here is what the data says.
The ranking: Square wins, and it isn’t close

Two things stand out:
Square dominates search. Google showed our pages for “mahjong square” and “square mahjong” searches a combined 54 times — more than four times the next layout. If you have never tried it, Square Mahjong opens with a friendly outer ring and tightens toward the center.
Search and play don’t always match. The layout people play most on our site is the Turtle — the classic pyramid. Players seem to search for novelty (“what is that square layout?”) but settle into the traditional game. Both instincts are right: the Turtle is still the best way to learn, while Square, Gate and UFO are the layouts that make you search at midnight.

An early signal: autumn is coming
The most surprising query in our data? “autumn mahjong” — in July. Seasonal players start searching six to eight weeks before the season turns. We keep the Fall Mahjong layout up year-round, along with Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas editions, so seasonal tiles are ready whenever you are.

Our first clicks arrived from five countries: the United States, Spain, Germany, Japan and Turkey. Mahjong solitaire is genuinely global — which is why this site speaks six languages, from English to 中文.

By search impressions, the Square layout — it drew more searches than all other named layouts combined in our first 28 days. By page views on our site, the classic Turtle pyramid leads.
Where does this data come from?
Two first-party sources: Google Search Console (which searches showed our pages, July 2026) and our own anonymous page-view counter, which records one count per game page view — no accounts, no tracking beyond the count itself.
Are these mahjong layouts free to play?
Yes. Every layout mentioned here is free, runs in your browser, and needs no download or registration.
How often will you update this ranking?
We plan to revisit the numbers as they grow — a few hundred searches make a sketch, not a portrait. Check back after the autumn season, when we expect the seasonal layouts to shake the table.
