How to Play Classic Mahjong

Classic Mahjong is a free online Mahjong Solitaire layout played with 144 tiles (288 for Double Play) arranged in the shape of a classic. The goal is to clear the board by matching pairs of identical free tiles. A tile is free when it has no tile on top of it and at least one side (left or right) is open. Click two matching free tiles to remove them. Clear all tiles to win.

This layout is rated Easy with an average completion time around 3m. Use the Hint button if you are stuck, the Undo button to take back a move, and the Shuffle button when no more moves are available. Your best time is saved in your browser, so you can try to beat it on the next run.

Tips

Classic is the traditional pyramid the whole game family grew from, and it rewards the fundamentals: free the long edges first, prefer matches that uncover new tiles, and never empty a suit carelessly — a suit with one tile left is a dead end. The center stack holds most of the answers, so open it gradually instead of rushing the top.

FAQ

Is Classic Mahjong free?

Yes, completely free, no download or registration required.

Is Classic Mahjong good for beginners?

Absolutely — this is the layout to learn on. The balanced pyramid teaches every core skill: reading free edges, planning unlocks, and managing suits. Harder variants like Hollow make more sense once Classic feels comfortable.

What makes the Classic layout different from other layouts?

It is the original. Almost every other layout on this site is a variation on Classic’s pyramid — some taller, some flattened, some bent into rings — so skills learned here transfer everywhere.

What is the best opening move in Classic Mahjong?

A pair on one of the long outer edges of the base. Edge matches free the most tiles per move and open sightlines into the center stack.

What should I do when no moves are left in Classic Mahjong?

Use Hint — on a full pyramid there is nearly always one more pair than you can see. If the board is genuinely locked, Shuffle deals the remaining tiles into a fresh, playable order.

How long does a game of Classic Mahjong take?

Roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Experienced players who open the center early can finish in under 10.
