How to Play Turtle Mahjong

Turtle Mahjong is a free online Mahjong Solitaire layout played with 144 tiles (288 for Double Play) arranged in the shape of a turtle. The goal is to clear the board by matching pairs of identical free tiles. A tile is free when it has no tile on top of it and at least one side (left or right) is open. Click two matching free tiles to remove them. Clear all tiles to win.

This layout is rated Easy with an average completion time around 4m. Use the Hint button if you are stuck, the Undo button to take back a move, and the Shuffle button when no more moves are available. Your best time is saved in your browser, so you can try to beat it on the next run.

Tips

The Turtle’s long bottom rows are your lifeline: clear them early to keep the board breathing. Most of the tiles are buried in the tall center stack, so when a side tile and a center tile both have a match, take the center one. Leave the single cap tile on top alone until you can pair it immediately — it holds the whole stack shut.

FAQ

Is Turtle Mahjong free?

Yes, completely free, no download or registration required.

Is Turtle Mahjong good for beginners?

Yes — the Turtle is the classic layout most players learn on. The wide base offers plenty of opening matches, and mistakes are easier to recover from than in compact layouts like Tower Mahjong.

What makes the Turtle layout different from other layouts?

Its pyramid shape: long rows at the base with a tall stack rising in the middle. Most tiles sit inside that stack, so the whole game is about opening the center without choking off the outer rows.

What is the best opening move in Turtle Mahjong?

Any pair sitting on the long bottom rows. Each match there frees the tiles above and keeps your options wide. Avoid opening with pairs that unlock only a single tile.

What should I do when no moves are left in Turtle Mahjong?

First use Hint — on a busy Turtle board there is often a pair hiding along the edges. If the board is truly locked, Shuffle rearranges the remaining tiles. Some games limit how often you can shuffle, so treat it as a last resort.

How long does a game of Turtle Mahjong take?

Usually 10 to 15 minutes. Whether you open the center stack early or late is what decides if you finish closer to 10.
