Mahjong Solitaire for Complete Beginners

If you have never played mahjong solitaire, you can learn everything you need in about five minutes and clear your first board in ten. This guide is the zero-experience starting point: no jargon, no assumed knowledge. By the end you will know the one rule that matters, how to start a game, and what to do when you get stuck. For a slightly deeper walkthrough, follow up with our how-to-play guide.

Your First Game in 5 Steps

  1. Open the Turtle layout. It is the friendliest starting shape.
  2. Look at the board. Most tiles are arranged in a flat turtle shape with a raised dome on top.
  3. Click any tile that highlights when you hover. That is a playable tile.
  4. Find another tile with the same picture and click it. Both tiles vanish.
  5. Keep matching identical pairs until the board is empty.

What to Expect

The game feels simple at first and then suddenly tricky. Around halfway through, you may run into a position where no matches seem available. That is normal. Use the Hint button (it highlights a valid pair) or the Shuffle button (it rearranges the remaining tiles). Neither ends your game; they are there to keep things moving.

The Only Rule You Need First

A tile can be selected only if nothing is on top of it and at least one side (left or right) is open. That is the whole rule. Everything else, strategy, scoring, layout choice, builds on top of it. Full rules are in our rules guide, but for your first game, this single sentence is enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long until I win my first game?

Most beginners clear their first Turtle in 10 to 15 minutes. By the third game, that drops to under 8.

What if I get stuck?

Use Hint to find a match, or Shuffle to rearrange the board. Both are built into every game.
