Autumn Mahjong in July? The Early Seasonal Signal in Our Data

It is late July. Depending on where you are, it is beach weather — and yet our search data says a slice of you is already thinking about falling leaves.

This week “autumn mahjong” showed up in our Google Search Console impressions — in mid-summer. And it isn’t alone: our German Halloween page already earned a real click. Seasonal mahjong, it turns out, doesn’t wait for the season.

The query that shouldn’t exist yet

In our first data post we mentioned the surprise: players searching for “autumn mahjong” in July, six to eight weeks before the leaves turn. Those aren’t mistyped queries. The people searching now are planners — they want to know the tiles will be there when the season arrives.

There’s a second data point, smaller but just as telling: our German-language Halloween Mahjong page earned its first click this month. One click is not a trend — but it rhymes with the query data.

Why seasonal players search early

We can’t prove intent from a handful of queries — small numbers, honestly reported. But the pattern fits how seasonal games behave everywhere: players don’t discover a Halloween layout on Halloween. They look it up early, bookmark it, and come back when the pumpkins are out. The search is the reminder; the play comes later.

If that reading is right, the layouts being searched today will be the clicks of September and October. We’ll report back and see.

What we’ll be watching

Two questions for the follow-up: do early impressions turn into in-season clicks, and does the early-searching crowd play differently from the in-season crowd? Our anonymous page-view counter is running, so when autumn actually arrives we can compare searches against real plays and tell you which signal was the honest one.
