Gate Mahjong Free Online
How to Play Gate Mahjong
Gate Mahjong is a free online Mahjong Solitaire layout played with 144 tiles (288 for Double Play) arranged in the shape of a gate. The goal is to clear the board by matching pairs of identical free tiles. A tile is free when it has no tile on top of it and at least one side (left or right) is open. Click two matching free tiles to remove them. Clear all tiles to win.
This layout is rated Hard with an average completion time around 6m. Use the Hint button if you are stuck, the Undo button to take back a move, and the Shuffle button when no more moves are available. Your best time is saved in your browser, so you can try to beat it on the next run.
Tips
Gate is two tight towers joined by a thin bridge row, and the bridge tiles are the most valuable on the board — they unlock both towers, so never spend one on a pair that frees nothing. Empty one tower completely before starting the other; splitting your attention jams both. Keep an eye on the gate arch itself: tiles tucked under the bridge only open late.

FAQ
Is Gate Mahjong free?
Yes, completely free, no download or registration required.
Is Gate Mahjong good for beginners?
It is middling in difficulty. The two towers are compact, but the bridge gives you clear priorities. If Gate feels tight, Butterfly offers a more open board to practice on.
What makes the Gate layout different from other layouts?
Its structure: two vertical stacks connected by a narrow bridge, like a torii gate. Every layout decision revolves around when to spend the few bridge tiles.
What is the best opening move in Gate Mahjong?
A pair high on either tower — not on the bridge. Lower the towers first, and let the bridge tiles rescue you in the midgame when options thin out.
What should I do when no moves are left in Gate Mahjong?
Use Hint to check both towers before assuming the board is locked — matches often hide on the inner faces. Shuffle is your reset if the towers truly jam.
How long does a game of Gate Mahjong take?
About 10 to 15 minutes. Finishing one tower before touching the other is the biggest time-saver.
