← American Mahjong Guide

Jokers are the wild cards of American Mahjong. Eight of them. And they completely change how the game works. If you’re coming from Chinese Mahjong where there are zero jokers, this is the biggest adjustment you’ll make.

Here’s the core rule: a joker can stand in for any tile you need — except flowers, and except tiles in a “single” position on the NMJL card. That’s it. They’re wild. They’re powerful. And they get stolen all the time.

How Many Jokers Are There?

Eight jokers in a standard American Mahjong set. All eight are identical. No special joker types or restrictions — just eight wild cards floating around the table.

Where Can You Use Jokers?

Almost anywhere. Pungs, kongs, quints — jokers can fill in. The main exception: singles on the NMJL card. If a hand shows a tile in a “single” position (marked S), you cannot use a joker there. Also, some hands on the card explicitly restrict or ban jokers. Always check.

The Joker Exchange

If you have a joker in an exposed meld and someone discards the actual tile that joker is replacing, they can swap it — take your joker and give you the real tile. It’s called “robbing the joker.” It feels awful when it happens to you. It feels amazing when you do it to someone else.

Joker Strategy

  • Don’t hoard. Jokers in your rack do nothing. Use them.
  • Protect your jokers. If you expose a joker, be ready for someone to steal it.
  • Watch for joker steals. Track which tiles are already exposed. Know when your joker is vulnerable.
  • Jokerless bonus. Many groups give extra points for winning without jokers. Weigh the risk vs reward.
